Hi there, welcome to the BLOG of my life as a Vagabiker. Beryl calls me a 'Free Spirit' my Grandpa a B.U.M. of no fixed address. Kelly says I'm 'off the wall'. I think that the Toad is closest saying I'm the Cat in the Hat it's fun to have fun—but you have to know how.

These are the stories of my unique, home-and-job-free Natness.

Naturally, quasi-legal events are fictional. Everything else is the unvarnished truth.

atop wolverine overlooking anchorage and the alaska rangeAssault on Wolverine

woke-up, packed my gear, kitted-up in the Lifa, and then read, and cooked lunch. At lunch I was informed the hiking wolverine takes 3h in the summer, and will take me 5h today. So with 4h to hike, I was told to wait for tomorrow, so I left. But of course forgot ‘my’ trekking poles, since I didn’t put spikes in my shoes, I figured poles would be smart. (more…)

The last great ski weekend

descending the hillary stepPeople keep asking if I will be coming back to Alaska. I really appreciate the beauty, and the cool things that you can do with mountains. I don’t have a return date on the calender, but I’m planning on riding from Quesnel up to the Arctic Sea in the spring.
I have started my Alaska Departure routine. Which includes returning the items I’ve ‘rented’ to WalMart (Hair Clippers, having created ‘Belgian MoHawk’ another one of my uniquely horrible hairstyles, etc) and arranged one last pot-luck. (more…)

“The Last Frontier”

It looks like 2007 is shaping up to be a busy one as I’m planning (but not limited to): train for the Olympic nordic ski team, climb Denali, bike tour South America , guide in Italy, race bicycles, bicycle tour to the Arctic, race Idita Sport, build a house, build a canoe, go on a longggg canoe trip…

Last weekend I just skied, and saw 7 more moose. Which is what you’ve gotta do up here in the AK.

a day in the Anchorgian Life

Friday, February 2nd, 2007

OK, back to my de-plane-ing, almost a week ago now.

It’s 11pm, but there is still a fair amount of light out, simply because there is waist deep snow almost everywhere, including fairly deep stuff on the roads, which reflects the street lights up, which in turn are bounced down off the clouds. (more…)

Surly ‘Nice Rack’ bike rack

Surly ‘Nice Rack’ Front.

Adjustably is good. The rack came out of true, but it’s cromoly so I was able to bend it straight. It’s also very heavy. It’s a really cool looking rack, beefy, and can hold much more than most front racks (70lb rating) and you can strap things on top of it.
