The swim deal (it’s a secret)
So I have been spending a lot of time in the pool. From nothing, to 1km workouts being big, to 3km workouts being impossible…. I just stepped out of a 5km day in the pool. However for all the time in the pool over the past 2 months I’ve hardly made any improvements. My wetsuit makes me faster, but you already know that. I’ve been placing a lot of the blame on my technique, and though it’s not perfect, I don’t think it’s what is holding me back.
I was doing some hard pieces 3 days ago, and some goof (not Sean) in the lane next to me, who had awful technique, was keeping up. This bummed me out a bunch, but I realized the solution.
Since arriving in Tucson and was training so much, swim workouts essentially became recovery.
Now that I am qualified for IM and will be spending an hour (hopefully 58minutes) on the 3.8km NO WETSUIT swim. Thats 5 minutes I have
to take off of where I am now.
Just like the 3am naked crying revelation while we were 45 minutes behind Vail with 3 days left in RAAM - K.I.S.S. all the way.
Then it was get on the bike and ride as fast as possible. Get off rest, recover, and then go ride hard again.
I need to train harder. In a nutshell. At least 3 days a week, my swim workout is the focus of the day. At the end of the sets, I’ll be breathless, and when I get home I should need help opening jars. Go back to the grindstone and it will come.
Otherwise Canadian Cyclist did a follow up story on me
Summary: I need to swim harder to make me stronger. Frickin’ genius, I’m on it.
