Training in Vegas
Well, I couldn’t really see spending lots and lots of time here, but it’s perfect for the training I’m doing now. Hot and dry, perfect weather. Though there isn’t a lot of variety with the roads, for the 3 weeks I’ll be here, the stunning scenery of Red Rock won’t wear off before then.
Last year on my birthday it was my first ‘triathlon training day’. I did a 1km swim, really slowly, followed by a 50km bike. It was hard. I lost 8 minutes to the Dudette in the swim. Today to ‘re-celebrate my birthday I’ll swim 1h15, bike 2h30, and run an hour. Mostly tempo/ race pace. The other funny thing is that this will be a light training day compared to some of the others.
Otherwise I guess I have made it to some extent because I am getting re-hashed on the Slowtwitch.com forum.
the most annoying thing is the guy who managed to call me ‘Nate’ dude! I think that it’s a compliment being called a ‘cannonball’.
To the guy who said I should be a pro and called me a Sandbagger… tell the Xterra race directer that, and hopefully I can get a start in that event. Of course I’m banking on getting a start there based on my IM Kona result. I’ll let you know the plan on that (other than being first amateur, regardless of the weather). Also, well until last July I hadn’t run or swim in 14 seasons. It does help that I don’t have a job.
Back to Vegas. Yeah it’s different. There are slot machines/ video poker everywhere. For my elliptical trainer workouts it was either a $100 membership or a series of ‘trial memberships’. But the gym here,
you’ve never seen so many 50 year old women with giant fake boobs and stretched back faces. (Mom asked me what I look at for 2h workouts - I’m shaking my head at the craziness of this place.) The air is clear, I think I’m at the top of the climb, because it looks close, but it’s really a ways off. I’m living 20km uphill from the strip, and out at night I can see the Luxor’s spotlight shining straight up.
OK cheers until next week if I get a ‘rest’ day then.
