Hi there, welcome to the BLOG of my life as a Vagabiker. Beryl calls me a 'Free Spirit' my Grandpa a B.U.M. of no fixed address. Kelly says I'm 'off the wall'. I think that the Toad is closest saying I'm the Cat in the Hat it's fun to have fun—but you have to know how.

These are the stories of my unique, home-and-job-free Natness.

Naturally, quasi-legal events are fictional. Everything else is the unvarnished truth.

The Sean Bechtel Interview.

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008
When Nat showed up in Tucson he hardly knew Sean Bechtel, and an hour later they were sharing a bed for the first of two weeks of their training session. There haven’t been many hours that they’ve spent apart. After 2 months training together the longest separation was 2h (2x 1h massage with Mona).
2 weeks later they upped that time to just over 3h (after Seans swim start until the start of Nat’s run) at Oceanside.
I have also learned that when Nat was out on a date last week he locked the keys in the car so that he had an excuse to call Sean so that there was excuse him (and his AAA card) to come over.

I took my wiener (dog) for a walk today

Friday, July 27th, 2007

RubenOK well I have finally started getting up trip stories. I am back in Ottawa for another few weeks- walking dogs. Somehow I seem perpetually jet-lagged - so maybe it’s that or maybe just from spending 3-6h a day stopping and romping through the area swamps, bogs, bushes, and trails with only K9’s for company.

Today I got called in to walk Ruben the Wiener Dog (here after simply referred to as ‘my wiener’) and thought the whole episode hilarious.

My wiener is around 13 inches long, weighs 7 lbs, and is covered in soft brown fur. (more…)

The straight dope.

Hello there.

Yes I am doing fine. Thanks for everyone who is wondering if I am lost somewhere, AWOL or otherwise.

If you have not heard the news is that Jan Ulrich’s DNA matched up to the DNA found in the refrigerator of a Spanish ‘doping doctor’. I don’t think that anyone really is terribly surprised at this, his Lawyers were trying to block the DNA transfer, and when they failed he retired.

Technically the entire investigation is shelved, and as one, fingered athlete argued, buying a gun, doesn’t make you guilty of murder. But come on, what did 200+ athletes involved in this toothless investigation (only 58 were cyclists) have their blood saved for? The Red Cross? (more…)

Nat vs. Wolverine

atop wolverine overlooking anchorage and the alaska rangeAssault on Wolverine

woke-up, packed my gear, kitted-up in the Lifa, and then read, and cooked lunch. At lunch I was informed the hiking wolverine takes 3h in the summer, and will take me 5h today. So with 4h to hike, I was told to wait for tomorrow, so I left. But of course forgot ‘my’ trekking poles, since I didn’t put spikes in my shoes, I figured poles would be smart. (more…)

The last great ski weekend

descending the hillary stepPeople keep asking if I will be coming back to Alaska. I really appreciate the beauty, and the cool things that you can do with mountains. I don’t have a return date on the calender, but I’m planning on riding from Quesnel up to the Arctic Sea in the spring.
I have started my Alaska Departure routine. Which includes returning the items I’ve ‘rented’ to WalMart (Hair Clippers, having created ‘Belgian MoHawk’ another one of my uniquely horrible hairstyles, etc) and arranged one last pot-luck. (more…)

“The Last Frontier”

Tuesday, February 13th, 2007

Is what you see on every car as soon as you step foot in Alaska. Essentially, it’s your waver, tread here at your own peril.

I think that I am getting a little soft in my older age, rife with accrued wisdom.

Aside from providing some ski paths, a little snow removal, and hosting a sled-dog race the local government, and area doesn’t provide much in the line of entertainment venues. Sure there are plenty of bars, but essentially for an Alaskan. Recreation is stomping off into the wilderness and more often than not, hurting yourself. (more…)

Bowling for Cars, with, well, other cars

Sunday, January 21st, 2007

By this time everything is going pretty well with my 4-legged friends. They are used to me, and I also know which ones I need to keep a closer eye on, which ones will try to fight who. etc etc. So things are getting pretty routine. You could even say that I’m in a rut.

In the evenings Kev and I are doing various home renovation projects, so I’m doing hardware store runs, drinking Corona, watching Holmes on homes fully domesticated, blah, blah, stick me in a wooden box.

Then a week ago today I had my first ever car-car accident. (more…)
