Hi there, welcome to the BLOG of my life as a Vagabiker. Beryl calls me a 'Free Spirit' my Grandpa a B.U.M. of no fixed address. Kelly says I'm 'off the wall'. I think that the Toad is closest saying I'm the Cat in the Hat it's fun to have fun—but you have to know how.

These are the stories of my unique, home-and-job-free Natness.

Naturally, quasi-legal events are fictional. Everything else is the unvarnished truth.

Life with out cycling is really boring - Marc Lanoue

Friday, August 15th, 2008

I was talking to Marc tonight. He’s spent most of the last 3 years riding in France and really enjoying the depth of life over there. He also had to take some time off of cycling - which really is an enjoyable for life type of sport.

Otherwise I’m up at 6:30 to swim with Chelsey, shes in the tail end of her high volume phase. I made it through 2h of her 2h10 workout yesterday morning. She dropped me swimming backstroke (she is a world record holder) to my Freestyle… so I went home, should have napped, but drank the last of the coffee instead. (more…)

new bike.. not for long

Thursday, August 7th, 2008

I'll post it's actual pic soonSo I got my new Hawaii TT bike yesterday, from Gears, which was really exciting. Swapped out the parts and got it rolling, just as the heavens opened. So I went out with Yorkie and some of the guys, of course with the rain and near darkness (yes mother I had a light on). Bam hit a rock and flat. fix it, ride home, shower, sleep.

Today we were leaving for the brick workout, and as I go to pack my beautiful new bike, it’s got a rear flat, (guess yesterday was a double flat). Somehow in the rush to fix that, I forget cycling shoes… guess the bike-run transition will be that much faster..  We’re riding in a pack, and two guys touch wheels in front of me, boof. Not a happy camper. (more…)

the bike tour: Nashua NH via Adarondaks

Thursday, July 24th, 2008

SO I finished the muskoka tri, hung out 5h for awards (plaque and socks) drove home slept 2h, ate supper, and jumped into the subie for the 5h drive to Ogdensburg NY and the start of my bike tour. I cracked after 4h and put the tent up behind a church and slept.  (yes this is a slightly old post, but I have posted the pic’s up on-line).

Plus I just got a holla from Kurt and Jen’s 2WD Euro Tour. They’re over in in Norway still at the start of a multi month, multi country euro tour. (more…)

Happy Canada Day

Wednesday, July 2nd, 2008

So I got up to Chelsea Quebec yesterday for the Tuesday of the long weekend. I love this area, quiet clean. And last August this is when I get into the swim of things again.

Most importantly my allergies are minimal up here. So I was pretty happy to be able to go out riding today, and then do a lap of the Park tempo (22km) and just feel good. In fact so good that I kept on going for a bit, just enjoying being able to breath deeply, and un-hindered. (more…)

Home is Where the Heart Is for Triathlete
By Darren Lum
June 18, 2008
Like the wheels on his bike, his life has come full circle toward achieving a childhood dream. After several years making a living road cycling for various teams in the United States, including a short stint with the Trek Volkswagen team, Nat Faulkner came home to Muskoka to compete in the Muskoka Triathlon in Huntsville this weekend with new friend and training partner, Sean Bechtel.Far from physically intimidating, at only five foot seven, Faulkner is seemingly chiselled from granite, solidly built with an inner strength to match, clearly conveyed in his eyes and delivered in an unwavering sure voice.

The Sean Bechtel Interview.

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008
When Nat showed up in Tucson he hardly knew Sean Bechtel, and an hour later they were sharing a bed for the first of two weeks of their training session. There haven’t been many hours that they’ve spent apart. After 2 months training together the longest separation was 2h (2x 1h massage with Mona).
2 weeks later they upped that time to just over 3h (after Seans swim start until the start of Nat’s run) at Oceanside.
I have also learned that when Nat was out on a date last week he locked the keys in the car so that he had an excuse to call Sean so that there was excuse him (and his AAA card) to come over.

The swim deal (it’s a secret)

Monday, April 14th, 2008

oceanside bikeSo I have been spending a lot of time in the pool. From nothing, to 1km workouts being big, to 3km workouts being impossible…. I just stepped out of a 5km day in the pool. However for all the time in the pool over the past 2 months I’ve hardly made any improvements. My wetsuit makes me faster, but you already know that. I’ve been placing a lot of the blame on my technique, and though it’s not perfect, I don’t think it’s what is holding me back.

I was doing some hard pieces 3 days ago, and some goof (not Sean) in the lane next to me, who had awful technique, was keeping up. This bummed me out a bunch, but I realized the solution.

I’m an addict

Saturday, April 5th, 2008

the targetsSo after my last post (Wed?) I found out that there is another local race here in Clermont… The 25th Great Clermont Triathlon. You can still enter, because I believe that I just did**. It took me a while to convince Coach Barrie to allow me to do this, but he just relented. Now instantly I’m quivering with nerves (literally) at the though of racing again. Any questions? I’m an tri addict. I’m sure I’ll be yapping again Mon/ Tues to tell ya how the race went.
Otherwise because of the travel costs associated with races and the fact that I have reached my primary early season goal… qualifying for Ironman. This is much ahead of my predicted schedule. So until October 11th I don’t have any big races I will taper for. (more…)
